The Centre for Aboriginal Independence and Enterprise
Dennis Jose

Dennis currently works as a project manager with BHP Billiton in Port Hedland WA. His primary interest is indigenous economic development. Knowledge in this area was developed over eight years whilst delivering housing and infrastructure projects into Aboriginal Communities.

Dennis Jose of Yidinji heritage was born and grew up in the rainforest country of Innisfail.

He completed his first degree in 1994 and spent his graduate years in federal and local government as a civil engineer. On leaving the government sector, Dennis returned to his home region of Far North Queensland where he worked with engineering consultancy – Arup, as a program manager of the National Aboriginal Health Strategy on behalf of the former ATSIC.

Dennis then moved into a project management role with engineering consultancy - Maunsell Australia, to directly deliver housing and infrastructure projects into indigenous communities throughout Queensland and New South Wales.

Through these positions, Dennis was able to learn practical lessons on how to develop innovative ways of providing long lasting indigenous employment for the communities in which he worked. Dennis’ position is that some strategies clearly only work in the short term. These short term strategies are proving counter productive and should be removed from all delivery processes in favour of trialling innovative strategies developed from past learning. The result would be a focus on long term indigenous employment as a basis to economic development. Rather than short term success that only strives to meet the immediate goals of the infrastructure or housing program.

Dennis now works as a Project Manager with BHP Billiton in Port Hedland WA. Although his role no longer requires direct involvement with the Aboriginal community, Dennis continues his keen interest in indigenous economic development as a board member for the CAIE.
